Substance Dependence
I noticed that more and more youngsters and teenagers nowadays are involved with some kind of substance addiction or dependence. While it’s not my place to judge or tell them what to do, I think it’s dangerous to undergo such activity. Substance dependence applies to recreational drugs, marijuana, prescription drugs, alcohol and smoking. I believe everyone is entitled something to enjoy a little, be it a glass of wine or beer, but when you cross a line then things become a little out of control. I’m not talking about having a good time but becoming really dependent on the substance(s) of your choice. The youth are attracted to the “cool” image that comes with these substances because they do in fact bring people together and enjoy same things. Or when people get depressed they turn to these things out of loneliness or for any other reason. I think it’s an adult’s responsibility to educate the youth the dangers of these substances without getting that “holier than thou” attitude in the way. I don’t think it’s a good way to get the message across. I believe everyone has experimented with drugs, alcohol and smoking at some point in our lives including myself. But then I discovered my relationship with Jesus. He made me realize what’s important and discovered a true love that overcame anything that I did wrong. It’s not the people who get dependent but the demons or dark spirits who tempt and eventually trap us to do stupid things to ourselves. Not everyone gets trapped which is a blessing in itself. I think it’s important to choose wisely when you partake in something. I believe that our bodies are our “temples” but we are allowed to enjoy whatever fruits God has given us as long as we follow the godly ways without getting heavily involved. It’s okay to be tempted or curious. To partake in something knowing that it will not do you any good, then that’s something different. I don’t want to see people hurt by things that can get them hurt badly. There are several reasons why God want us to follow His ways in order to protect us from long term harm without feeling burdened by dogma or legalism. We are bound by human laws on earth, not spiritual laws. We have the freedom to do whatever we want as long as we are guided by Holy Spirit, something not everyone will get to experience or don’t believe in it. It breaks my heart when someone becomes addicted to any of the substances above because I know how difficult it is to break away once you get into it too deeply without a way out. Again, the choice is yours as I already know mine.
